Everyone on earth is thirsty for something. Most people do not understand the nature of their thirst nor how to quench it. They are dying of thirst, but hoping the next drink will satisfy them. Millions of people are drinking from wells that will never satisfy. As people search for relevance and significance, they go from one activity to another, from one religion to another, from one relationship to another. How do you quench your thirst?
In John chapter 4 we read about a Samaritan woman who thought men would quench her thirst. How do you quench your thirst? She had been married five times and was now living with a man who was not her husband.
She came to a well to draw water at the hottest part of the day because she was rejected by others for her immorality. She encountered Jesus who being weary, hungry and thirsty asked her for a drink. The Samaritan woman was shocked because in those days Jews hated Samaritans. Knowing her eternal salvation was at stake, Jesus set social customs aside. He continued conversing with this adulterous Samaritan woman.
He told her in verses 13 and 14, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
The Samaritan woman did not fully understand Jesus' meaning as He offered her eternal life.
She answered Him in verse 15, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” Jesus then told her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
The Samaritan woman was startled by this strange request. The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”
She was even more startled by Jesus’ next remark: “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
By now the woman was alarmed. This man must be a prophet. He knows a lot about me. Jesus then revealed Himself to the woman. He told her He was the Messiah. At this point the Samaritan woman could have denied her sins but instead repented of her sins and put her faith in Jesus Christ and was saved. She ran back to her village leading a revival as she shared her faith with everyone.
How about you? You know that Jesus knows everything about you. Are you going to deny your sins or repent of them?
Like the Samaritan woman, salvation comes only to those who repent of their sins, and receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. At that point, Jesus alone will quench your thirst?
